Americans expected to spend $ 29.1B on Valentines Day in 2026

In 2016 the average Valentine’s Day shopper spend 147 US dollars. This number lead to 19.7 billion dollars nationally, according to a surnvey from National Retail Federation. Americans are expected to spend almost 10 billion more only ten years later.

The expected amout shoppers will spend this Valentines day hits records according to a survey from the National Retail Federation and Prosper Insights & Analytics.

“Much of that growth is driven by middle- and high-income shoppers who are expanding their gift lists to include friends, co-workers and even pets in addition to loved ones.” says Katherine Cullen, the Vice President of Industry and Consumer Insights at American National Retail Federation, in a press release.

Average spending is projected to reach $199.78 per person, up from $188.81 last year and higher than previous records. More than half of consumers plan to celebrate, most buying gifts for romantic partners, while many will also purchase presents for friends, family members and even pets, according to the survey.

Candy remains the most common gift, but jewelry and dining out account for the largest share of total spending.

People spoiling their pets is increasing

Americans are showering their pets with affection this Valentine’s Day, with spending expected to reach a record $2.1 billion, according to the National Retail Federation.

“One of the biggest emerging trends and opportunities for brands in pet is specialty holidays,” says Dewar Gaines, CEO of Gaines Family Farmstead in Irondale to National Retail Federation.

More than one-third of people celebrating the holiday plan to buy gifts for their animals now more often than for friends or co-workers.
