Copenhagen’s bike lanes: When prides meet daily concerns
In the world’s most bicycle-friendly capital, shared lanes for both locals and tourists are sparking safety clashes as novices disrupt the daily commute.
Named as the world’s most bicycle-friendly capital, Copenhagen sees both locals and visitors take to the streets on two wheels.
However, as inexperienced tourists and commuters share the same cycle lanes, the everyday rides are not that smooth anymore.
Locals Say Tourist Cyclists Put Safety at Risk
“They can be quite disturbing, especially during the summer rush hours,” said Florina, a local commuter who cycles daily.
“They ride slowly and don’t know how to raise their hands when turning.
She hopes that visitors can be more aware of the city’s early rush hour, which often starts earlier than in other cities.
Lin, another Copenhagen resident who also uses their bike for daily transport, shares similar concerns.
She thinks tourists do not take this seriously.
“They will feel like they are playing a game, but this is real, traffic—fast and serious. They need to be aware."
Lin found that inexperienced riders have many predictable movements, which make the roads unsafe and messy for themselves and others.
Rental Shops Educate Tourists on Cycling Rules
There are many rental shops for tourists to rent bicycles.
“We have a rule that requires us to inform customers about cycling regulations when they rent a bike,” said Mohamed Tofayel Hossain, who works at a bicycle rental shop in Copenhagen.
Experts Push for Better Tourist Outreach on Bike Safety
“The best way to reach tourists wherever they are is through brochures or targeted pushes on the apps they use here,” said Mikael Colville-Andersen, an expert in bicycle urbanism.
He suggests that the city should communicate more effectively with visitors.
He believes the pattern of tourists has been well established, predictable, and won’t cause much disturbance in most neighbourhoods.
