Kenyan Youth lured abroad into exploitation
While international attention is focused on foreign conflicts, Kenya is fighting for the justice of their citizens. The Kenyan Foreign Relations Committee says illegal recruiters are lurking nationals to fight for Russia in the Russian-Ukrainian war, exploiting their will to work.
Awareness of these recruitment networks is limited along the country, especially among young people. “The information is widespread among those lured to take international jobs that turn out to be fake, or worse still, who are sold to the highest bidders in Europe and the Middle East” , says media expert Dr. Harron Mwangi.
Young people are frequently asked to pay significant sums of money to agents that promise them opportunities to work abroad. In a lot of cases, these people don’t even leave the country, or worse, they are recruited to fight for Russia. “They pay up to USD 10,000 to these agents” , says Dr. Mwangi.
For those who actually travel in hopes of a better future, the reality is harsh. They have no legal protection and often end up missing, leaving their families with no answers. According to Kenyan authorities, almost 200 locals have been enlisted to fight on Russia’s side.
Cooperation
Kenya is taking a step to address this issue while working with the Kenyan Foreign Relations Committee, human rights defenders and media experts, spreading awareness and efforts to hold these illegal recruitment groups accountable.
“Transnational reporters, human rights defenders, and civil society are working together to bring such matters to the attention of Kenyans and the international community” , says Mwangi.
While global eyes remain focused on other problems, the country continues its fight, confronting the shadow networks that are exploiting younger generations under the disguise of work promises. The struggle urges for better opportunities in their home country and protective measures for the youth.
