Trump threatens fellow Republicans during tariff vote
In a 219 - 211 vote, the US House of Representatives has voted to rescind the imposed tariffs on Canadian goods.
A sharply divided House of representatives voted on Wednesday to overturn the President's imposed tariffs on Canada from a year ago. Six republicans joined the Democrats to approve the repeal.
The legislation now heads to the senate, where its prospects remain uncertain. If that clears, it would still need President Donald Trump's approval. Thus, the vote sits as a symbolic gesture to fight against Donald Trump’s obsession with power.
During the vote, Trump took to his social media platform Truth Social, threatening his party members.
“Any Republican, in the House or the Senate, that votes against TARIFFS will seriously suffer the consequences come Election time.”
The message underscores Trump’s continued pressure over GOP lawmakers and the political risks of opposing him.
The vote reveals broader dynamics within the Republican party. In an interview over email, Reed Brody, author of ‘To Catch a Dictator’ said party members fear political retaliation from Trump.
“Republcians live in fear of Donald Trump, particularly Republican office holders who have to face a primary election,” said Brody.
Brody explained that in many congressional districts the primary election is the real survival ground. Crossing Trump doesn't just risk criticism, it invites a pro-Trump challenger backed by a strong base.
“Republicans don't fear losing so much to Democrats. They fear losing to a pro Trump Republican.”
Brody added that conservative media outlets such as FOX can amplify pressure on candidates who break away from Trump, shaping the strong voter base against them.
As the bill moves to the Senate, the debate over trade policy becomes intertwined with a broader struggle over loyalty and the future of the Republican Party.
