Copenhagen kids recycle their toys

Every Thursday of this September Østerbrohuset invites children to swap their toys and experience recycling in a game-like activity.

Stine Holm, the organiser of the “SorteringsSjov” workshop, highlights that children are as much citizens as adults, therefore this event is aimed at them. With a focus on recycling, kids are welcomed to exchange a toy of their own to the one they find interesting.

“We never buy new toys on a regular basis – we only buy toys for Christmas and other celebrations,” says the mother of two boys who visited the workshop, Yara Bagatelia.

She notices that her children quickly forget toys – this initiative not only lets them experience the joy of receiving an unused toy but also saves parents from purchasing a new one.

“This is a great initiative,” smiles Yara Bagatelia. “My older son, when he is done playing with his toy, asks whether we can bring it to the recycling station so that some other boy could play with it,” says the mother and highlights that the initiative teaches kids generosity.

Recycling – the main focus

“What we do with the workshops is not just putting up a concept but calling it fun recycling,” Stine Holm describes the event.

As she highlights, it is important for families to know that they can recycle there instead of buying new toys. In order to make the event exciting for kids, she tries “to collect what’s extra curious for them.”

“We can mainly hope for changing behaviour,” concludes Stine Holm.
