Fra jetset bil-journalist til kok og revolutionær kommunist

“I got sick of working with a lot of men who looked like they would dry rob a woman’s labia lips and ask them ‘did you come yet?’ after 20 seconds”

Sådan fortæller Milan Bastos om sin tid som freelance journalist for bilmagasinet “WANTED”. Den 35-årige Sydafrikaner rev i 2019 teltpælene op og flyttede til København. Han ville have en mere jordnær tilværelse. Han ville se tingene fra et nyt perspektiv. Derfor startede han som kok:

“I wanted to work with my hands. As a chef, I get to work with the natural world. With plants, dead animals, and people. When I work with food it feels real.” 

Milan Bastos oplevelse med at flytte fra Sydafrika til Danmark har givet ham et nyt syn på sig selv og de kontekster og strukturer, som han er vokset op med som hvid Sydafrikaner:

“It was first when leaving South Africa that it really occurred to me how fucked up the country is. So many things that I have learned growing up as a white person, that is just rooted in racism. In that way leaving South Africa became a moment where I got to see the structures in a different way.” 

Denne indsigt fik ham til at føle et ønske om at engagere sig politisk. Derfor er han i dag medlem af RKP: Revolutionært Kommunistisk Parti i København. 

“I saw a system that is fucking over everybody. It made me want to engage with the world in a meaningful way.”
