Police Aggression in Sabadell Sparks Calls for Investigation
A video showing a municipal police officer hitting a young man during Sabadell’s Festa Major has sparked accusations of excessive force and calls for an investigation into the incident.
The 30-second video, which was shared on social media by a political group, shows part of a police intervention in which an officer appears to strike a young man before several officers restrain him. The images have prompted criticism over whether the use of force was justified and proportionate.
However, Sabadell City Council has warned that the video only shows a partial fragment of the incident and that the intervention cannot be properly assessed without knowing what happened before the recording began.
“We understand the concern that images without context can generate, but it is not possible to assess a police action only from such a partial and decontextualised fragment of video,” said Judit Calle, a communication officer at Sabadell City Council.
The council said that the facts are being analysed “rigorously” and that any review of the intervention must take into account police reports, witness accounts and the protocols applied during the operation.
The controversy has also highlighted conflicting interpretations of the incident. While critics have questioned whether the intervention was disproportionate, the police union SIP-FEPOL has defended the officer’s actions and claimed that the young man attempted to take the officer’s weapon. The circumstances behind that claim, however, could not be independently verified before the publication deadline.
The young man’s version of events has also not been obtained. Further information from him, his family or his lawyer would be necessary to establish what happened before and after the moment captured on camera.
The incident took place during Sabadell’s Festa Major, when the Municipal Police was responsible for maintaining security during the city’s events. The City Council also highlighted what it described as the “exemplary” work carried out by the Municipal Police throughout the celebrations.
The case now raises questions about how alleged excessive use of force should be investigated and what evidence is needed to establish whether a police intervention was proportionate.
For now, the available video provides evidence of only part of the confrontation. Establishing what happened before the recording, why the young man was detained and whether the force used followed police protocols will require further investigation and independent accounts.
