Copenhagen fashion stereotypes | real or fake?
Keeping up with the latest fashion trends may be one of Gen Z’s greatest concerns today. Yet, as the world of fashion grows and young icons express creativity through their daily outfits, stereotypes of “Copenhagen Style” have erupted in wardrobe tantrums while Nordic fashion brands hit the jackpot.
Is this ‘Scandi Style’ nothing more than a stereotype?
In a 2025 article published by Dansk Mode & Textile they shared that from 2023 to 2024 the Danish fashion industry had a turnover that increased by around17.5%, and in addition, the industry’s first quarter of 2025 was then up 8% year-on-year.
While interviewing people strutting the streets of Copenhagen, mixed opinions of Scandi fashion were expressed. When asked if there was a “specific Copenhagen fashion style”, Casper, a 21-year-old Copenhagen local, disagreed.
there is a lot of different styles here.... people just dress how they would like to dress.
On the other hand, Livvy and Eliza, two 20-year-old Americans who have just moved to Copenhagen as Erasmus students, expressed that they had to buy new clothes that fit the “Copenhagen Style”. The two further stated that black shoes, ballet flats, jackets, knitwear, boots and leather are all classified as trending Nordic fashion.
While locals may think their day-to-day outfis are nothing more than a second thought, international newcomers are boosting Scandi fashion brands one turtleneck at a time.
