Gaining experience while serving community – “it can feel like cooking at home with friends”
In the city center of Copenhagen, a small group of volunteers meet up every Wednesday to cook an affordable dinner for their fellow students
I didn't have prior work experience in a restaurant. I feel like why this is a good place to start because they're open," says Trevor, an urban design student from the USA.
In the student house of Copenhagen volunteers are guided by an experienced chef, Nicklas. He teaches them everything they need to know to prepare and serve dinner: from chopping ingredients to making delicious meals following his recipes and creating good atmosphere for the guests.
"It's just like cooking at home with friends, it's very relaxed and very chill", - is how chef Nicklas describes the kitchen atmosphere. The idea behind the Community kitchen is to create a social space where students can meet each other.
"I wanted to join the community kitchen because I really like cooking and I thought that would be like a really good, like social bonding experience," says Hanna, a student from Taiwan.
Students come here not only for the social aspect but also to get an affordable meal in Copenhagen. The dinner costs 35 DKK (less than 5 euros), that's a cheap option compared to Copenhagen prices. The chef challenges himself to make the recipes vegan so everyone can enjoy them.
